Checklist for Vertebrate Animals

Review Animal Research and IACUC (Institution Animal Care and Use Committee) overview information and Harvard-specific policies, procedures and guidance on Harvard’s Office of the Vice Provost’s for Research Policy & Compliance’s web page.

Review FAS-specific policies, procedures, and guidance on FAS’ Use of Animals in Research and Teaching web page.

Review FAS’ Guideline for the Use of Non-Human Vertebrate Animals in Research and Teaching.

Complete an Animal Experimentation Protocol Form. Forms are available from the IACUC Administration Office.

Submit proposed change in experimentation procedures (i.e., number of animals, species used, researchers involved, etc.) to IACUC committee for approval before any changes are implemented.

Ensure that all researchers working with vertebrate animals have completed or are supervised by someone who has completed the IACUC Training, which covers regulations, humane treatment of animals, and health hazards. Course information, dates, and times are available from the IACUC Administration Office.

Ensure that all researchers (students, faculty, research staff, etc.) are enrolled in the Occupational Health Program (OHP). OHP enrollment forms are available from the IACUC Administration Office (IACUC@fas.harvard.edu)

Once the animal experimentation protocol is approved, IACUC training is completed, and OHP enrollment is completed meet with the Office of Animal Resources (OAR) for orientation. Note all three must be completed prior to the OAR Orientation.

Note that Animal Research may require additional approval beyond that given by IACUC. If your research will include biohazardous materials, radioactive materials, human embryonic stem cells, controlled substances, etc. please reference the Office of the Vice Provost’s for Research Policy & Compliance website for additional information.
