The William F. Milton Fund, established in 1924, is one of the oldest bequests made to Harvard University. Funding research projects in the fields of medicine, geography, history, and science, the winning projects must either promote the physical and material welfare and prosperity of the human race, investigate and determine the value and importance of any discovery or invention, or assist in the discovery and perfecting of any special means of alleviating or curing human disease. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research at Harvard University administers the Milton Fund. You can view the full request for proposals here.

This year, there are two tracks. Applicants may apply to both tracks, provided each proposal is distinct. The links below lead to further information and the application portal for each track.

  • Eligibility: Junior faculty with the title of Assistant or Associate Professor who hold an appointment at a Harvard School (including those based at affiliated hospitals), Junior Fellows of the Harvard Society of Fellows, and Postdocs at Harvard with a formal accepted offer to join the faculty at one of Harvard’s schools.
  • For this funding cycle, a second track of applications is invited, designed to encourage the exploration and application of generative AI in research settings. Applicants are invited to propose research projects with a generative AI component, as applicable to the priorities of the Milton Fund, for new work or a new initiative.
  • Eligibility: Faculty members who have an appointment with PI rights at a Harvard School, Junior Fellows of the Harvard Society of Fellows, and Postdocs at Harvard with a formal accepted offer to join the faculty at one of Harvard’s schools. Applicants may be experienced practitioners or newcomers to generative AI technologies, but must propose new work or a pilot project.
