DOE Materials and Chemical Sciences Research for Quantum Information Science
Harvard Expression of Interest Deadline: January 7, 2021 by noon
DOE Pre-Proposal Deadline: January 27, 2021
FAS/SEAS/OSP Full Proposal Deadline (if invited): February 22, 2021
DOE Full Proposal Deadline (if invited): March 1, 2021
Award Amount: Up to $1,500,000 per year for 3 years

The DOE SC program in Basic Energy Sciences (BES) has announced its interest in receiving applications from single investigators and from teams for support of experimental and theoretical efforts to advance understanding of quantum phenomena in systems that could be used for quantum information science (QIS) and the use of quantum computing in chemical and materials sciences research. New and renewal applications are invited in two topical areas: 1) Quantum Computing; and 2) Next-Generation Quantum Systems.

BES held two community Roundtables to define priority research opportunities for fundamental R&D relevant to quantum information science (QIS). The reports of these Roundtables are available here:

The priority research opportunities (PROs) described in these two reports form the basis for this Funding Opportunity Announcement. All applications must propose basic research that will address one or more of these PROs

Harvard is limited to submitting two pre-applications as a Lead Organization. There are no limits to the number of applications Harvard may engage in as the non-lead. Given the tight timeline, interested Harvard applicants are asked to submit the following to VPR@harvard.edu by noon on Thursday, January 7:

  • Name of PI and team members along with institutional affiliations
  • Topical Area of Interest: “Quantum Computing” or “Next-Generation Quantum Systems”
  • Proposal title
  • 1-page project summary
