The DOE recognizes that abundant sources of data, high-performance computing and networking, energy-efficient algorithms, and Al-related technologies can be harnessed to significantly accelerate and expand the impact of scientific research, and it is focused on the underlying approaches for Al-enhanced scientific and engineering capabilities to significantly transform the scientific method for accelerated discovery and innovation.

This funding opportunity announcement addresses a broad spectrum of research priorities in basic computer science and applied mathematics research in the fundamentals of Al for science that are critical to enabling trustworthy Al for scientific applications advancing human understanding and addressing national needs. Each pre-application and application must identify one of these primary research areas:

  1. Extreme-Scale Foundation Models for Computational Science
  2. AI Innovations for Scientific Knowledge Synthesis and Software Development
  3. AI Innovations for Computational Decision Support of Complex Systems
  4. Federated and Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning and Synthetic Data Creation
  5. The Co-Design of Energy Efficient Al Algorithms and Hardware Architectures
