The Simons Foundation is now accepting letters of intent (LOIs) for its Simons Early Career Investigator in Marine Microbial Ecology and Evolution Awards. The purpose of these awards is to help launch the careers of outstanding investigators in the field of marine microbial ecology and evolution who will advance our understanding through experiments, modeling or theory. This year the award will be for general career support, not support for a specific project. Projects focusing on the microbiomes of animals or plants or on paleontological records will not be considered this year.
Applicants must have carried out research in a tenure-track position for at least one year and no more than eight years (start date of first independent position must be between November 2011 and November 2019) and must currently hold a tenure-track, tenured, or an equivalent independent position in a U.S. or Canadian institution. She/he must be the principal investigator (PI) or co-PI currently or within the past year on a research grant from a national governmental agency or major foundation.
The foundation anticipates appointing up to four investigators in 2020. Prospective applicants must submit an LOI by November 5, 2019, 5:00 PM. Two letters of recommendation are required from former mentors or other scientists who work in your field and are familiar with your research. The deadline for references to submit the letters of recommendation is Tuesday, October 30, 2019, 5:00 PM. Finalists selected for submission of a full application will be announced by January 15, 2020. Awards will begin April 1, 2020.
