The Breakthrough Prizes recognize the world’s top scientists and honor important, primarily recent, achievements in the following categories:

The Breakthrough Prizes in Life Sciences are awarded to individuals who have made transformative advances in understanding living systems and extending human life. The Foundation will award up to six prizes and one prize is specifically dedicated to Parkinson’s & Neurodegenerative Disorders. 

The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics recognizes individuals who have made profound contributions to human knowledge. It is open to all physicists – theoretical, mathematical and experimental – working on the deepest mysteries of the Universe. The Prize can be shared among any number of scientists. Nominations are also being taken for the New Horizons in Physics Prize, which will include up to three $100,000 awards for junior researchers who have already produced important work in their field.

The Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics is given annually to one individual that has made recent (in the last 10 years, although earlier contributions may also be taken into account) outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics.  In addition, this year sees the launch of the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, which will include up to three $100,000 awards for junior researchers who have already produced important work in their field.

Nominations:

  • Anyone may nominate a candidate at the online nominations page during the open nominations period.
  • Self-nominations are not allowed.
  • A valid nominations form should have basic biographical information on the nominee and nominator and at least one, but no more than three, third-party letters of recommendation.
