The first session of the AY14-15 Faculty Scientific Management Series, a program designed for tenure-track faculty and aimed at addressing some of the more difficult aspects of managing a scientific research program. Topics covered in this series range from grantsmanship to people management; sessions will be offered one Friday per month from 12 to 1:30pm in the Northwest Building, room 425. Lunch will be served and social time will be allotted to give participants the opportunity to interact informally with colleagues from across the sciences.
The first session of the term, entitled You are a Harvard Professor - Now What? Navigating your Academic Career and Managing your Lab, will be offered on Friday, October 17 @ 12pm. The introductory Q&A-style session examines the resources available to support new faculty in FAS and SEAS. Two tenured faculty, Pete Girguis (OEB) and Yun Zhang (OEB/CBS), will share their own experiences and reflect on lessons learned over the course of their careers. This will be an opportunity to ask all the questions that may be on your mind, such as how to find good mentors, how to set up one’s lab, how much to publish (quantity vs. quality), how to handle personnel issues, etc.
