NSF Centers for Innovation and Community Engagement in Solid Earth Geohazards

Anticipated Funding Amount: In FY 2022, Track I awards were up to $500,000 for 2 years. Track II awards were up to $3,000,000 per year for 5 years. A total of $7,000,000 was available to support 3-5 awards.
This opportunity supports university-based centers that will study the solid Earth processes that can result in natural hazards, broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in the geoscience workforce, and foster community engagement through public outreach and hazard mitigation. Centers created under this grant will catalyze, coordinate, and produce transformative research, lead innovation, and enable convergent approaches for systems-level insights that require the collective efforts of a large group of individuals. They will focus on addressing major, fundamental science challenges for understanding solid Earth geohazards, primarily those related to faulting, volcanoes, mass movements, and other dynamic processes.
This program has two tracks: Track I – Center Catalyst awards are intended to provide resources to catalyze initiatives to develop future centers. These awards would support groups to develop the science, management, and broader impact concepts for a major research center. Track II – Center Operation awards are intended to support the operation of a fully developed center.
Applicant institutions are limited to no more than two applications as the Lead institution across both tracks. In order to secure a Harvard nomination, interested applicants must submit a brief pre-proposal to the Office of the Vice Provost for Research by October 15, 2023.

The NSF has stated the RFP will be updated four weeks before their 11/16/2023 deadline, and the OVPR may need to append the internal application.
