SUMMARY:NIH Notice of Special Interest for Accelerating Leading-edge Science in ALS (ALS2): Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:
NIH Notice of Special Interest for Accelerating Leading-edge Science in ALS (ALS2)
FAS/SEAS/OSP Deadline: September 23, 2020
Sponsor Deadline: September 30, 2020
Award Amount: Application budgets are not limited but must be commensurate with the scope of the proposed research.

A Notice of Special Interest for Accelerating Leading-edge Science in ALS (ALS2) has recently been released to accompany the NIH Transformative Research Award funding opportunity announcement. The Transformative Research Award supports individuals or teams proposing transformative projects that are inherently risky and untested but have the potential to create or overturn fundamental paradigms and may require very large budgets. The award mechanism is particularly well-suited to interdisciplinary teams of scientists looking to combine their expertise and pursue new ideas with the potential to transform ALS research.

ALS2 will take a three-pronged approach to improving understanding of ALS:

Adapt emerging tools and technologies from neuroscience and cell biology to identify what causes ALS and how the disease progresses, leading to new therapeutic strategies.

Attract new talent from a range of scientific disciplines, including cell biology, bioengineering, chemistry, biophysics, genomics, environmental health sciences, and computational science.

Examine biological similarities between ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases, including frontotemporal dementia, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Kennedy’s disease, spinal muscular atrophy, primary lateral sclerosis, and aging-induced neuromuscular degeneration.

A pre-application interactive webinar for the Transformative Research Awards will be held on Monday, June 29, 2020, at 3:00 PM EDT. NIH program and review staff will discuss the funding opportunity and answer questions from prospective applicants. Pre-registration for the webinar is required.
