Life Sciences Curriculum Committee Synopsis

December 11, 2012
Chair: Erin O’Shea
Attendees: Dan Kahne, David Pilbeam, Rachelle Gaudet, Rob Lue, David Haig, Ilyana Sawka

A draft of Science Division Course Designation Nomenclature and Criteria was distributed. This draft contained guidelines that would be appropriate for Life and Physical Sciences courses and proposes four divisional criteria for use in evaluating a course’s designation in the catalog. Recommendations made during the meeting included:

  • Stressing the interdisciplinary content for appropriate courses so that students will be aware that certain classes satisfy introductory requirements for multiple concentrations
  • Developing a template or set of guidelines for course descriptions
  • Discussing at a later meeting the broader question of whether to define courses based on clientele or subject matter
  • Changing the number of certain courses, with the new numbering being parallel to that of Physical Sciences courses
  • Improving the freshman advising/placement process to ensure that students do not end up in classes for which they are overqualified
